(Feel free to substitute crap with any other word.JATowslee I rate the new box as what most people would call crap. I will be surprised it I don't out live the new one. There was no damage to the carton but one side of the mailbox had a large dent in it. after going through over 40 Vermont winters. I hit the old box with the hammer and it didn't even leave a mark on it.
I should have bought a new hinge and put it on the old box. The box I was replacing is over 40 years old. The door had finally given up the ghost and rusted off. I pounded the dent (new box) out with a 'dead-blow' hammer. It has been knocked off the post it was mounted upon several times. When I opened the box the mailbox was in, I didn't notice the damage on one side of the mailbox.
It had a couple of minor dents about the size a golf ball would make. The metal is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the thickness of the new one.
This mailbox is terrible. I have to hang my mail up to dry. Even with the door as carefully shut as it can go, my mail still gets extremely wet.
It will require a custom sheet of plywood to mount it as standard mailbox mounting boards are too small. The flag is standard size. This mailbox is embarassingly large. The picture has nothing for scale except for the flag. I had to leave a note for my mailman that this is indeed a mailbox and not a doghouse.
The only thing I found that I did not likeis the door does not stay closed. I bought this because my letter carrier does not want to bring my packages to the door. Other than that it serves the purpose I bought it for.
Simple plastic part now not available at all as far as I call tell. I agree with other reviewers that the problem with this box is the lack of available replacement parts for the plastic latch which WILL fail. Will spend more for a box with metal latches (such as Gibraltar brand)for a replacement.
